On the surface, the whole concept of free summer shows is peculiar: it's the winter that we New Yorkers really need an incentive to get out of the house. Between the down jackets, cab rides, coat checks and hot drinks, winter is simultaneously the most expensive and least enjoyable season.
So we deserve a reward for enduring months of sub-freezing temperatures and chilly winds. Like the free coffee you get after receiving ten punches on your frequent-drinkers card, free summer shows serve as a "thank you" for all the time, energy and money you've put into hearing the music you love.
Just as we did last year, we've compiled a list of the many free shows planned for the summer; check back for updates each week. Take a few seconds during sound-check to give yourself a pat on the back -- you deserve it. Just be sure to take advantage of these offerings while they last. Before you know it, you'll be four-layers thick battling a Nor'easter on your way to a $25 show at the Bowery Ballroom.
