First Look: 06.28.05 (Bizarre, Esthero, Jamie Lidell)

Heading to the record store? Here's what's new this week.

Hannicap Circus

Album samples
Arguably the most talented (black) member of Eminem's D12 posse, Bizarre's debut solo record will most likely include a great deal of talk about crippled people, doing drugs, and laughing at crippled people while doing drugs. Rolling Stone has already given the record two stars, which is a good sign, but the lead single sounds like every other Eminem-produced track ever. Eminem contributes a verse, of course, but other guests, including Raphael Saadiq and Obie Trice, are peppered throughout. There is even one track with Devin the Dude and
Big Boi! Mmm ... collaborations.

Wikked Lil Grrrls
Warner Brothers

Album samples
Wikked Lil' Grrrls marks the return of this Canadian singer after seven years without a follow up to her debut, Breath from Another. That album has maintained a strong following among the downtempo crowd, and her appearance on the one good Black Eyed Peas song, "Weekend," established her reputation among the underground-hip-hop crowd. Wikked Lil' Grrls (or "Wicked Little Girls," as it spelled in English) has been finished for more than a year, but various moves by the label, including the release of a few EPs late last year to remind people of Esthero's existence, pushed the record back to, well, now.

Jamie Lidell

Album samples
The hype engines are revving up for Warp's big foray into the Starbuck's crowd. After releasing a mostly electronic debut, Brit Jamie Lidell has decided to show everyone his best Black Soul Singer impression on his new album, and everyone is talking heresy, using words such as "Otis," "Marvin," "Stevie," and "resembles" in their reviews. I think better words to use would be "over" and "rated," but if you dig a little bit of that newfangled soulless machinery with your soulful renditions, this might be right up your alley.

Ying Yang Twins
United State of Atlanta

Album samples
Um, Atlanta isn't a state, idiots. The Ying Yang Twins, comprised of
D-Roc and Kaine, had a big hit on the radio this spring with "Wait (The
Whisper Song)," the lead-off single to this album, which promises to be equally stupid (and I don't think they would take that as an insult).
If you get past the ultimate sexism of the song, the idiocy of the lyrics is so astonishing as to almost make the level of stupidity flip around to genius. Do they actually chant "beat the pussy up"? Unsurprisingly, no one cares, and they've got guests including Mike Jones, Busta Rhymes and Missy Elliot on the release. "We're not rappers, we're entertainers," Kaine told Billboard earlier this year. I agree with one part of that assessment.
