First Look: 05.10.05 (Spoon, Weezer, The Robot Ate Me, Electrelane)

Heading to the record store? Here's what's new this week.

Spoon

Gimme Fiction
Merge

Album samples
Delay after delay pushed this record's release back about a full year, but finally, Austin's finest return with the follow-up to 2002's near-perfect Kill The Moonlight. Britt Daniel and Jim Eno pull back on the production experimentation and instead opt for songwriting experimentation. Even when things don't work out just right, they've got talent to burn, and it shows on this record.

Weezer
Make Believe
Geffen

Album samples
There are some mysteries that will never be solved. One is Rivers Cuomo shelving an entire album so that he could work on his spirituality and refine his songwritingonly to release songs like "Beverly Hills" and tape videos with Hef. Well, his knack for a hook should be intact, and with all the weirdness, we probably dodged a bullet -- they could have easily released a DVD of the band performing yoga or something.

The Robot Ate Me
Carousel Waltz
5RC

Album samples
A robot would not pick up on the conflict in pairing perky melodies with frightening and/or depressing lyrics, and neither does Ryland Bouchard. His lo-fi pop defies easy characterization of either sound or mood. Maybe he's just trying to keep things light even when he's having a bad day. Or maybe he's plotting to kill us all. Either way, if I lived in northern Washington. I'd be thrilled. Or worried.

Electrelane
Axes
Too Pure

Album samples
The British four-piece earned themselves a little play on The O.C. with last year's "On Parade." Add that to a spot on the cover of Wire, and their tightly wound, electronically aided pop songs will likely be popping up all over in 2005. Axes is their first album with new bassist Ros Murray, but these four feisty females show no signs of slowing down.

Headphones
S/T
Suicide Squeeze

Album samples
Pedro the Lion's David Bazan and Tim Walsh meet up with Starflyer 59's Frank Lenz, and they leave the guitars at home. That's right, boys and girls: Pedro goes symphonic. Nothing but synthesizers and drums here, and the result is, well, very synthesized. Bazan's familiar voice weaves tales of love and loss, and he'll probably sneak some redemption in there, too.
