The National
Alligator
Beggars Banquet

Album samples
When did Brooklyn become a home for small-town Americana? Matt Berninger's serious baritone adorns a picture-perfect collection of country-tinged indie rock performed by the rest of this quartet, which comprises two sets of brothers -- Scott and Bryan Devendorf and Aaron and Bryce Dessner. The Alligator has slow songs, fast songs, sad songs, happy songs. But most of all, it has good songs.

Architecture in Helsinki
In Case We Die
Bar None

Album samples
The second full-length from the preeminent twee Australian octet -- and we say that with the utmost certitude -- is sure to be chock full of random instruments and sugary boy-girl vocals. And if it's got one song as perfect as "Fumble" from Fingers Crossed, it'll be worth a look.

Of Montreal
The Sunlandic Twins
Polyvinyl

Album samples
If you started telling us about a band that made its name in the late '90s by playing quirky psych-pop, then randomly started using electronics in 2004 and followed it up one year later with an electro-pop opera, we'd tell you to up your dosage, then put you back in that comfy, padded room. Unless you were talking about Of Montreal, in which case we'd steal your pills and listen to their entire catalog.

Adult.
D.U.M.E.
Thrill Jockey

Album samples
Adult. covers all the Detroit bases: it's a male-female duo, it's electro and its music makes you feel like you're getting mugged in broad daylight. This EP marks the band's first release for Thrill Jockey after the two -- Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller -- decided to spend more time on their band rather than running their own label, Ersatz Audio.

Supersystem
Always Never Again
Touch and Go

Album samples
Formerly known to Dischord Records fans as El Guapo, the eclectic NY/DC quartet drops its first record in two years. Imagine DFA producing a Pixies record and you're in the ballpark. And you're probably dancing in there.
