First Look 10.25.05: First Look: 10.25.05 Heading to the record store? Here's what's new.

Here's a quick look at a handful of new albums, as well as a list of the rest of the stuff that's supposed to hit shelves this week:

Fiery Furnaces
Rehearsing My Choir
Rough Trade

Remember when you were arguing about Blueberry Boat with that record store clerk? He said that the Furnaces were so good, “they could feature their grandmother on their next album and it would still rule.” You said “that would be right up their insanely pretentious alley.” Well, here’s your chance to pick up the argument where you left off. The most divisive sibling duo in the indie world lets their grandma take center stage for some spoken word weirdness, and a bit of singing. We wish we were joking, too. Early reports are squeaking restlessly on plastic-slipcovered furniture while waiting for mom to get off work. Audio Sample

Vashti Bunyan
Lookaftering
Dicristina Stair

In 1968, Bunyan bought a horse and cart, and set off for a commune Donovan was creating on the Isle of Skye. After two long, car-stereoless years, she arrived, only to find that Donovan had already left. This is why today, we drive cars and fly airplanes. But her experience led to 1970’s Just Another Diamond Day, which until now stood as Bunyan’s only LP, though recent attention from freak-folkies like Devendra Banhart and her EP collabo with Animal Collective have pushed her name back into blogosphere. Banhart, Joanna Newsom, and Adem, among others, lend a hand on Lookaftering, her second album, and if that isn’t enough for you, neo-classical wizard Max Richter produced it. Check and mate. Rogue Wave
Descended Like Vultures
Sub Pop

You’ve already thanked Craigslist for your new swanky new apartment and your sweet new job, but don’t forget to thank it for Oakland, CA’s finest indie rock commodity. After Zach Rogue cemented the band’s lineup via the king of the internet classifieds, the group went to work on another chapter of cushy California pop. They’ve gotten a bit more adventurous this time around (mostly because it’s not just Rogue doing everything by himself), and there’s even been Best of 2005 talk batted about the ol’ interweb. At least this one’s a sure thing, unlike that fake casual encounters ad you replied to last weekend. Audio Sample

Sadat X
Experience and Education
Female Fun

It’s fitting that one of Brand Nubian’s founding members should drop a solo record called Education and Experience. Sadat X has reached a lot of milestones in his life as an emcee, student, and teacher, and he’s probably got plenty of both to drop on us. With production by Diamond D, DJ Spinna, the P Brothers, and others, as well as guest spots by Edo G, Sean Price, and many more, it looks to be a solid melding of new- and old-school sensibilities. And 15 years after Brand Nubian’s debut, All For One, hit the airwaves, Sadat’s nasally voice still sounds exactly the same. Now if we can just bring back Yo! MTV Raps we’ll be in good shape. David Dondero
South of the South
Team Love

Conor Oberst was probably looking for a few free lessons when he signed David Dondero to his Team Love label. You see, it’s possible to sing honky-tonky tunes of heartbreak and loss without being a whiny little bitch about it, and David Dondero is the bottle-of-whiskey-in-his-knapsack, hitchhiking-to-nowhere king of that shit. An NPR fave, Dondero’s bluesy country rock is funny, sad, outrageous, and true, as he grapples with his place in the world, both physically and metaphysically. Prefix is proud to support any artist who gets drunk and punches his own drummer, then tries to figure out why. Audio Sample
