First Look: 09.06.05 Heading to the record store? Here's what's new.

Here's a quick look at a handful of new albums, as well as a list of the rest of the stuff that's supposed to hit shelves this week:

Black Dice
Broken Ear Record
DFA/Astralwerks

Album samples
While it remains a term of derision for most of us, Black Dice has taken "noise" and turned it into a genre all its own, creating songs that go nowhere and everywhere simultaneously. The third album for this Providence, Rhode Island quartet, Broken Ear Record is the first in a new partnership between DFA Records and Astralwerks. Expect ringing ears, furrowed brows, and music that continues to turn musical epithets into musical resources.

M83
S/T
Mute

Sometimes, just sometimes, American audiences have to wait. Before 2003's pupil-dilating Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts finally hit stateside a year later, France's M83 released a self-titled debut on Gooom in 2001, a record we've still yet to hear. Featuring work by the original duo of Nicolas Fromageau and Anthony Gonzales (Fromageau left after Dead Cities' release), M83 should provide fascinating insight into the baby steps behind today's galloping synth howl.

Bellini
Small Stones
Temporary Residence

Album samples
The guy was always kind of a prick, but it took Damon Che's leaving mid-set at a show in Athens, Georgia for the point to really hit home. Fortunately, mourning is not in Bellini's blood. Alexis Fleisig (Girls Against Boys) stepped in to replace the former Don Cabellero drummer, and the re-formed quartet blew through a five-day recording session to produce its sophomore effort, Small Stones, a maelstrom of stinging guitar and Giovanna Cacciola's banshee wail.

Matt Elliott
Drinking Songs
Ici D'Ailleurs

Matt Elliott's resume reads like a Who's Who of pre-millennial British experimentalism. Besides stints in Flying Saucer Attack, AMP and Third Eye Foundation, Elliot has produced tracks for Hood and founded his own label, Linda's Strange Vacation, based in Bristol. But since parting ways with Third Eye Foundation a few years ago, Elliot has dropped much of the sample-heavy noise of his early days for a distinctive, Slavic-tinged folk -- a perfect setting for his bitter moods and shaky vocals. Now with France as his home and absinthe as his drink of choice, Drinking Songs should provide some welcome tunes to steady that walk from the bar to the bed.
