Best Albums of 2009 – Prefix Readers

We started the Decade No One Can Sufficiently Name (aughts, noughties, whatever — all of them suck unequivocally) with a hotly disputed election whose winner wasn’t announced until later than made sense. So, we at Prefix decided to end the decade in kind. But unlike Bush vs. Gore, the Prefix election to determine who put out the best album of 2009 didn’t involve ballot stuffing and sketchy recount practices. Well, maybe it did. Either way, we can positively, absolutely verfiy that no one named Jeb was involved in any way.

At any rate, below you’ll find our list of the Top 50 albums of 2009, as picked by us, the Prefix staff, and you, the Prefix reader. After much shuffling and a back and forth that has gone on long enough, our collective pick for album of the year is the xx’s self-titled debut, an album of majestic simplicity, palpable sexual tension and the kind of masterwork you’d never expect from the xx, a group of London-based 20-year-olds. The xx are followed by a list of bands and rappers that will probably be familiar to you. The results will surely be debated. Expect a Michael Moore documentary in three years.
