Track Review: Telepathe "I Can't Stand It"

The third track I've heard from the impending Rare Book Room Records debut compilation (following offerings from Deerhunter, and Palm in the Claw) foreshadows great things for the label. The uniform quality and continuity in soundÂÂover two songs might have been a coincidence, but at three it's a bona fide trend. We may justbe in the presence ofÂÂthe rarest of beasts;a compilation that works as aÂÂcohesive record.
Like the other mentioned RBR songs, Telepathe's "I Can't Stand It" is strange and pretty in equal measure. It takes a minute of low-ambient rumble and flat overlapping voices, before the heavy staggering rhythm comes to dominate. With that first drum hit, the ambience gets heavier too, swelling to delicious shoegaze proportions. ÂÂA sole quivering female voice enters, with a distant yet girlish tone. More than anything it sounds disappointed. "Oh, you know it could be so much better," nags the chorus. Both the melody and the sentiment are curiously hard to shake.
